Search instructions
Basic search
On the start page of the service, you can search for trademarks by typing any of the following search criteria in the search field:
- Words in the mark (word elements)
When searching by words in the mark, you can truncate your search terms by using the symbol * (e.g. begin*, *mid*, *end) and combine them with the operators AND, OR and NOT. The standard operator is AND, meaning that the search will only return trademarks matching all the search terms. To search for an exact phrase, use quotation marks around the words (e.g. “smart navi").
- Application number of the mark
The application number of a Finnish national trademark (e.g. T201954000), or the application number given by the PRH to an international registration designating Finland (e.g. W201954000). You can enter several application numbers separated by a space.
- Registration number of the mark
The registration number of a Finnish national trademark, or of an international registration designating Finland. You can enter several registration numbers separated by a space.
- Submission reference
The submission reference given by the PRH and written on the submission receipt of an online trademark application (e.g. FITM201900012345678).
All trademarks in the information service are included in the search.
Search with special characters
When searching by words in the mark, classification terms, or name of the holder (owner) or representative, use the Latin alphabet. The search equates the most common Latin letters containing accents or other diacritics to the basic characters of the Latin alphabet. We recommend, however, that you only use letters found in the Finnish alphabet for your search. Diacritics include the domestic characters å, ä and ö and some foreign characters, such as é and ü.
- Examples:
- The letter ä is grouped with a. If you search for väri, the word vari is also retrieved.
- The letter e is grouped with é. If you search for rose, the word rosé is also retrieved.
Search for all trademarks of a certain type or status
If you want to retrieve all trademarks of a certain type or with a certain status, run an empty search: just click on “Search" for the basic or advanced search without entering any search criteria. The search will return all the trademarks included in the information service, and you can filter the results, for example, to display only sound marks or marks with an ongoing opposition period. To use the filter, click on the icon on the right above the search results.
Advanced search
You can search for trademarks by the following details:

When searching by the holder’s or representative’s name or by classification term, you can truncate your search terms by using the symbol * (e.g. begin*, *mid*, *end) and combine them with the operators OR, AND and NOT. The standard operator is OR, meaning that the search will return all trademarks matching any of the search terms. To search for an exact name, use quotation marks around the words. For example, a search for “X-Magazines Ltd" will only return trademarks where X-Magazines Ltd is the applicant or holder. A search for X-Magazines Ltd will return registrations where either ‘X’ or ‘Magazines’ or ‘Ltd’ is included in the applicant/holder details.
You can enter several search criteria, and the search will return trademarks matching all your criteria. For more information about the search fields in the service, click on the question mark next to the field.
If you want to go back and change you criteria after the search, click on “Modify search" above the search results.
Search results
- The number of trademarks shown in the search results is 3,000 maximum. You will also see the total number of trademarks matching your search in the database.
- There are three different options to view the search results. Select between the options by using the icons for display settings above the results.
- Card view: Display the results in a card view.
- Table view: Display the results in a table. This option is not available on mobile devices due to their restricted display size.
- Image grid: Only the images included in the search results are displayed. Please note that not all trademarks include images. Therefore, the number of images displayed may be different from the number of search results.
- You can sort and filter the search results by clicking on “Filter and sort". When using a mobile device, click on the icon on the right above the search results to use the filters.
- Sorting arranges the displayed search results in an ascending or descending order alphabetically or by date, according to what you select.
- Use the filters to limit the search results by trademark type and status. Unlike sorting, filtering applies to the entire set of search results and not only to the results displayed. This means you can use the filters to refine your search, for example when there are more results than the maximum number to be displayed (3,000 results). If needed, select “Clear" to clear the filters. Running a new search will also always clear the filters.
- In the filter menu, trademark statuses are listed under two separate headings: “Status of registered or pending trademarks" and “Status of not valid trademarks". Click on a heading to select all the statuses under it at the same time.
- If you want to hide the menu for “Filter and sort", click on the button again.
- The filter button turns purple when filters are active.
- To see detailed information about a trademark in the search results, click on the image or application number of the mark. It is also possible to open a new tab in your browser for the details of the individual marks you are interested in.
- How to download the results, for example to Excel:
- You can download the displayed search results as a CSV file. The file contains 3,000 trademarks maximum. The character set of the file is encoded using the Unicode UTF-8 standard, and different data fields are separated by a semicolon. If you open the file in a spreadsheet program and, for example, Scandinavian characters are not showing correctly, read the instructions for your software on how to open CSV files encoded in UTF-8.
Search tips
- Vienna Classification
- Figures in trademarks are classified according to the International Classification of the Figurative Elements of Marks under the Vienna Agreement. This means that specific categories are provided for various figurative elements, such as celestial bodies or animals.
- These categories (Vienna codes) allow you, for example, to search for marks with no words or letters but with figures such as the sun and human beings or parts of the human body. Marks including such figures are found in category 1.3.7 (Sun with human beings or parts of the human body).
- Go to the Vienna Classification on the WIPO website. Open link in a new tab
- Applications, appeals and oppositions concerning trademarks
- The detailed information for each trademark includes a list of applications, appeals and oppositions concerning the mark. Click on their respective application numbers to see further details.
- To check the validity of pledges and licences, see their respective further details. If a pledge or licence is no longer valid, the last day of validity is indicated under “Expiry date".
- Please note:
- The Trademark Information Service provides no further details about appeals, as they are processed by the Finnish Market Court.
- In addition, the Trademark Information Service contains no further details about older applications concerning changes to trademarks. For these documents, the application number does not function as a link to further details.
