The num­ber of Eu­ro­pean pa­tent applica­tions from Fin­nish com­pa­nies con­ti­nued to inc­rea­se in 2024

The European Patent Office (EPO) has published its European Patent Index 2024, presenting statistics of European Patent (EP) applications. The EPO’s data for 2024 offer the following insights:

  • The EPO received almost 200,000 patent applications last year. The largest applicant countries were the United States, Germany, Japan, China and South Korea.
  • In 2024, Finnish companies filed 2,400 EP applications with the EPO. Finland ranks 14th in the statistics of countries applying for European patents.
  • Relative to the population, Finland makes the third highest number of EP applications in the world, behind only Switzerland and Sweden.
  • The number of EP applications filed by Finnish companies increased by 2.7%. 2024 was the fifth consecutive year in which the number of applications increased.
  • Nokia is the largest Finnish patent applicant, ranking 12th in the list of total applications and 5th for the number of applications for patents related to digital communication.
  • 29% of applications submitted by Finns included at least one female inventor. This is the fourth highest of all the major European patent applicants.
