The number of European patent applications from Finnish companies continued to increase in 2023

The European Patent Office (EPO) has published its Patent Index 2023 statistics of European patent (EP) applications. In 2023, Finnish companies filed 2,336 EP applications with the EPO. The EPO’s data for 2023 offer the following insights:

• The number of EP applications from Finnish companies increased by 9.2%. In 2023, the number of applications increased for the fourth successive year. Before 2020, the number of applications had fallen for several successive years. 
• Patent applications in digital communication saw particularly strong growth – an increase of 32% compared to 2022.
• Finland ranks 15th among the top 40 filing countries at the EPO.
• In terms of EP applications per capita, Finland ranks fourth in the world.
• Nokia moved up from 16th place to 12th on the top 50 applicants list.
