PRH to begin PPH cooperation with the patent office of Brazil in August

Antti Riivari, Director General of the PRH (left) and Júlio César Castelo Branco Reis Moreira, acting president of the INPI, agreed on initiating the PPH co-operation on 10 July 2023.

Brazil’s patent office, the Instituto Nacional da Propiedade Industrial (INPI) and the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH) have signed a memorandum of understanding to begin cooperating on 1 August 2023. The cooperation will begin with a five-year pilot period.

The Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) is an agreement between patent authorities to provide applicants with a fast alternative to obtain a patent by filing a second application corresponding to their first application with any office participating in the PPH.

Applicants may request PPH processing at the patent office of Brazil based on a Finnish application or the results of a PCT application examined by the PRH.

The purpose of the PPH is to fast-track the processing of patent applications and reduce overlapping examination work done by different patent offices. The PPH means that when an applicant has filed a first application with one office and received a positive opinion that the claims are allowable, they may request fast-track processing when filing a corresponding application with a second office.

For more detailed instructions about how to file a request, go to our PPH pages.
