The Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH) and the Dirección Nacional de la Propiedad Industrial (DNPI) of Uruguay have agreed to start Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) co-operation at the end of this year.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by Antti Riivari, Director General of the PRH, and Pablo Porro, the ambassador of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, in Helsinki on 3 March 2022.

The PPH co-operation will begin with a three-year pilot period. The exact initiation date will be announced later.

Uruguay is a significant operating area, especially for the Finnish forest industry, and the PRH started negotiations at the request of companies in the industry. Finland is now Uruguay’s first PPH co-operative partner outside South America.

What is PPH?

The idea of the PPH is to fast-track the processing of patent applications and to reduce overlapping examination work done by different patent offices. PPH means that an applicant who has filed a first application with a first office and has received a positive opinion that the claims are allowable may request fast-track processing when filing a corresponding application with a second office.
