EPO study: patents and standards enable a digital future
- A new study by the European Patent Office (EPO) shows a clear connection between standards and patents. By means of standards, a patented technology can be widely adopted, which expedites the spread of innovations to the market and promotes economic growth.
- The Unified Patent Court is becoming established as the primary place in Europe for proceedings related to SEP disputes.
Technological standards have enabled countless innovations, including smartphones and networked vehicles. The patent system plays a key role in developing standards: it incentivises research and development and facilitates the exchange of technological knowledge.
Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) are patented inventions that are necessary for implementing a standard. For instance, 5G and WiFi technologies would not work without solutions protected by SEPs.
By using unique standardisation data, the recent study by the EPO provides new evidence of the connection between patents and standards.
