PATLIB network

PATLIB is an acronym for PATent LIBrary. The PATLIB network is maintained by the European Patent Office EPO and consists of about 340 patent information centres working closely not only with the EPO but also with national patent offices and the EU Intellectual Property Office EUIPO. The national offices of countries that have joined the European Patent Convention appoint the members in the network. In Finland, it is possible to become a member through the Finnish Patent and Registration Office.

PATLIB centres were created to provide local access to patent information and other related information. In particular, SMEs, private inventors and higher education institutions get access to patent information and to high-quality patent information services via PATLIB centres. They have qualified and experienced staff who offer practical assistance on patents and a variety of other intellectual property rights.

PATLIB centres in Finland

PATLIB centres form an essential part of the provision of patent information in Europe. Together with the national offices, they often function as a first contact point for local end-users of the patent system. In Europe, the PATLIB centres vary a lot when it comes to their size, host organisation, financing, and service profile.

The Finnish PATLIB network has become active again after a few quiet years. The Finnish Patent and Registration Office, the Foundation for Finnish Inventions, invention advisors, and innovation advisors at universities have had a well-functioning collaboration network in Finland since the 90’s. Today, also higher education institutions and the Team Finland and Business Finland organisations continue this work.
